However, just in case it leads you astray, or if you’d prefer to navigate yourselves, head to the beach in Challaborough and you are pretty much there!! Please get in touch by phone or email and we can give you more detailed instructions.

Totnes Rail Station and Plymouth Railway Station are the closest train stations to the cottage. If you are planning to come by taxi there are normally taxis there waiting for you but we recommend booking a taxi in advance.

We operate a self check-in at Salty Lets. Before your arrival, you’ll receive an email or text with instructions and key code. When you get here, drive down the hill and into Challaborough/Challaborough Bay and head to the sea – follow your personal booking instructions from there. Please drive slowly! Check-in is from 4pm.

Check-in is from 4pm and check-out is by 10am.

We aim to ensure you have everything you need for a relaxing stay. Our single, king-size and super king-size beds have comfy bedding and we provide bath towels.

Each house has a well-equipped kitchen with and induction or gas hob, standard single or double oven and microwave, fridge and freezer. The Modern Beach House has two dishwashers. There are plenty of pots, pans and utensils.

Some basic supplies are included such as salt and pepper, olive oil, milk, tea, coffee, sugar, toilet paper, a kitchen cloth, sponge, tea towels, washing up liquid and sensitive non-bio laundry powder.

Each house has a smart TV with Apple TV (streaming only), woodburning stove, and gas or coal bbq depending on the property.

So that you know what to pack, here is a list of what is provided in your property:

  • All of your bed linen and towels
  • Tea, coffee (ground coffee and cafetière), milk and sugar
  • Olive oil, salt and pepper
  • Eco washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets (if your property has a dishwasher), dish cloth and sponge, tea towels, sensitive non-bio laundry powder
  • Handwash, small bath soap, toilet paper
  • Firewood, eco firelighters and matches
The beach is just metres from both Cosy Beachside Cottage (approx 50 metres) and the Modern Beach House (approx 20 metres).

There is good WiFi in all properties and the service is usually reliable and fast enough for streaming tv, e.g. Netflix. In the Modern Beach House there is a booster to send the signal through to the bedrooms.

Mobile phone reception is limited in the properties, so you will need to connect to the WiFi for calls and messages if you wish to stay connected. There is good mobile and 4G reception at the top of the hill leaving Challaborough and just up the hill on the coastal path going towards Ayrmer Cove (2-5mins walk).

Our Salty Lets properties are located right by the beach in Challaborough Bay, in the heart of the South Hams, on the South Devon Coast and on the doorstep of the great South West Coast Path. They are between Ayrmer Cove and Bigbury Beach and close to Bantham, Thurlestone, Hope Cove, Kingsbridge and Modbury.

The properties are a short distance from the beautiful seaside towns of Salcombe and Dartmouth and south of the wonderful Dartmoor National Park nearby. Access to this incredible landscape is just a 30-minute drive away. A 40-minute drive takes you to the charismatic town of Totnes or the seaside city of Plymouth and 50-minute drive to the west takes you to the beautiful county of Cornwall.

Further afield, you can get to many of the fantastic landmarks Devon and Cornwall has to offer including Beesands, Berry Pomeroy Castle, Dartmoor Zoo, Newton Ferrers and Moss Mayo, The Eden Project, and many of the world-famous beaches of Devon and Cornwall.
The nearest town is Modbury (about 12-minute drive), which has a Co-op and many lovely local shops including a butcher and deli, some great cafes, a gym, yoga barn, massage and holistic treatments at Modbury Therapy Centre. Kingsbridge is 20-minutes drive) which is bigger and has a good range of shops including Tesco and Morrisons.

In Plymouth and Totnes (40-minute drive) there is also a train station with regular services to Exeter, joining the main-line to London, Bristol and beyond.

A short walk from the Cottage and Beach House (about 10-minute walk) is Bigbury-On-Sea with the famous Burgh Island and Burgh Island Hotel or in different directions from the Cottage and Beach House (also about 10-minute walk) is the stunning Ayrmer Cove or The Journeys End Inn in Ringmore which serves award-winning pub and restaurant food (but not fine dining).

In summer there is a local shop in Challaborough Bay itself and year-round the fantastic Holywell Stores in St Anns Chapel (5-minute drive) sells great local produce as well as delicacies and all the basics!

The Cosy Beachside Cottage is a dog-friendly cottage and you are welcome to bring your well-behaved dog on request. There is an additional charge of £50 per dog. Please let us know when making your booking if you would like to bring your pet.

Our surroundings are home to lots of wildlife, so please keep control of your dog.
Guests are responsible for their dogs’ safety & security at all times.

Bag & pick up all dog waste in the garden at the cottage and in the surrounding area.
Please do not leave your dog alone in the cottage.

We have a strict no dogs in beds or on furniture policy, so please keep your dog out of beds and off the furniture and bring a dog bed with you if necessary.

If your dog is disruptive to neighbours, we reserve the right to ask you to leave at any point during your stay. If this is the case – you will not be eligible for a refund.

There is a Nisa local shop in Challaborough Bay itself, just metres from the properties. This has all the basics and is open most of the year apart from approx 6 weeks over winter.

In Challaborough itself, there is also a pub and 2x fish’n’chips shops as well as ice cream and other takeaways available.

Just five minutes drive up the hill is Holywell Stores in St Anns Chapel which is a lovely local shop with some great local supplies as well as the basics.

Ten minutes drive from Challaborough Bay is Modbury, where you will find a Co-Op as well as some local shops and cafes.

Cosy Beachside cottage has a toilet, shower and bath.

The Modern Beach House has a bathroom and en-suite. The bathroom has a shower, basin and bath and a separate toilet next to it. The en-suite has a toilet, basin and walk-in shower.

Outside of peak season we have some one-night availability on the Cosy Beachside Cottage. Occasionally during peak season and the school holidays there are some one night and shorter stay availability in both the Beachside Cottage and Modern Beach House.
Both the Cosy Beachside Cottage and the Modern Beach House have log burners / wood burning stoves available to use, complete with logs, firelighters, kindling and matches during winter. They also both have radiators for ease, cosiness and comfort during the colder months.

The Modern Beach House has parking for up to three cars on the driveway. The Cosy Beachside Cottage has off-peak season and night time parking outside the cottage. For the cottage you also have an allocated parking space down the road.
